10/17/13: Vlad

Hi Melissa and Dan. Today I got a call from Moscow and was told that our meeting will be shown on the first channel of the central television on October 25 at 15 pm Moscow time . I do not know , you can see it in America or not. Sent you a letter and parents by email if you get it let me know. Melissa , you are the main organizer of the trip to visit us , gather all their brothers and sisters with their families , take the parents and come by plane to Yekaterinburg , where we will meet you . I have a big house , space enough for everyone . let me know when you are going to fly . My mnuk [grandson], 16 years, in November flies to America Tambudet live with an American family and go to school, that would be better to learn a language . Well, that's news. Waiting for an answer . Vladislav .

The Story

In the late 1920s, after the Bolshevik Revolution, my Polish great-grandfather was arrested by the Communist government and sent to Siberia, forced to leave his two children behind. After eight years in a labor camp, he began a new life, afraid to return home. He thought his family was lost, but my grandfather (or Dziadek, as I knew him) survived. Decades later, Dziadek learned he had a half-brother in Russia-- my great-uncle Vlad, who's about the same age as my dad. After Dziadek died, though, all contact with the family was lost. In the fall of 2013, a Russian reality show reunited us, and now, thanks to Google Translate and a little creativity, we're able to (mostly) communicate. These are our letters. (Translated into English for Vlad, and back into English from the Russian for me.)
